Cities I Need to Revisit

Tela: a place I never would’ve visited without returning to Honduras

When you travel a lot, sometimes you end up with a limited amount of time in a certain location and end up wishing you had more time there. After visiting over 100 cities around the world, that has happened to me many times leaving me wishing I had more time in many different places. I don’t return to places I’ve already been often because I want to keep visiting new places, but there are several cities/countries that I really think deserve a revisit. And especially after revisiting San Diego earlier this year, I realized that I can revisit a place and have a new appreciation for it. So I’m going to list 5 cities I would love to return to because I feel like I didn’t get enough time there the first time.

5. Vancouver

My experience in Vancouver was not the greatest, but similar to New York (which is not on this list), it’s a place that I think I would enjoy given more time to explore it. British Columbia is one of the most beautiful places on the planet, so I had to take time to see it while spending a week in Seattle. I spent about a day in the Vancouver area, but because of the rush hour traffic and poor road designs, my time was greatly affected. What I did get to experience is a city that is more diverse than anywhere else I’ve ever been. With so many cultures represented in Vancouver, it almost felt like a real-life Epcot (Florida reference) while walking around downtown. And the surrounding areas are just beautiful. I visited Stanley Park, which I didn’t completely enjoy, and then made it out to Lynn Canyon where hiking offers some incredible views. Coastal towns on the outskirts of Vancouver were very welcoming and had beautiful views of the Pacific Coast. If given another opportunity to visit, I wouldn’t be as rushed for time, so the traffic delays wouldn’t affect my opinion as much allowing me to enjoy it more.

4. Tel Aviv

Tel Aviv is the city on this list that I have spent the most time in, but it was still only about a day and a half. I mostly visited museums while I was there because I was on a tour, but if it were up to me, I would be skipping the museums. Tel Aviv is a very exciting city on the Mediterranean with amazing Middle Eastern food. I did have time to walk around downtown a little, but I didn’t get out to the Jaffa area and I completely missed out on the beaches. Plus it was raining during my visit, further limiting my options. I would love to return to Tel Aviv someday to give the city another chance and see why it is considered one of the world’s greatest cities. The problem with this is that if I’m in Israel again, I will want to be spending as much time in Jerusalem as possible because it’s my favorite city in the world. I’m not sure how much time I would have to dedicate to Tel Aviv.

3. Nairobi

Nairobi is a city that I had wanted to visit for years, but then when I did eventually visit, I didn’t get to experience the city. I spent the night there and then went up north to other areas of Kenya. But as I understand, Nairobi is considered one of the greatest cities in all of Africa. I would love to get out to Nairobi National Park to see giraffes and elephants with the city’s skyline behind them. From what I remember about Nairobi, there were a lot of crowded markets and some beautiful surrounding landscapes. But I really want to go back someday to fully experience the city. The airport was definitely not my favorite, but I could overlook that in order to give this city another visit.

2. Québec City

Château Frontenac, the most photographed hotel in the world

QuĂ©bec City is one of my favorite cities in the world, but I only stopped here for a couple hours while traveling along the Trans-Canada Highway. This is a special city that deserves to be on everyone’s lists. The city feels much more European than anywhere else in the Americas. Everyone here speaks French, and the old cobblestone streets and Victorian architecture haven’t changed for hundreds of years. It’s a beautiful walled city overlooking the St Lawrence River with what is considered the most photographed hotel in the world, Château Frontenac, which looks like a castle. It’s actually the last remaining fortified city in North America, north of Mexico. While here, I explored the city on foot, tried some crĂŞpes, and rode the funicular down to a lower section of the city. I also visited Montmorency Falls right outside the city, which is higher than Niagara. Unfortunately, it was raining during my entire visit. I really want to return to QuĂ©bec City someday to spend a full week in this awesome place.

1. Kyiv

One of the biggest surprises for me was Kyiv, the capital of Ukraine. I originally didn’t expect much from this city, but after my permit to visit Chernobyl had been declined, I was left with about 12 hours in Kyiv. I took a walking tour of the city that led me to many of the highlights. Kyiv is filled with beautiful cathedrals, wide boulevards, and some fascinating Soviet and World War II history. I was blown away by Kyiv and believe it’s one of the most underrated cities in the world. Unfortunately I was sick while I was there, so I skipped trying the local food, but it looked really good. I consider this one of my favorite cities in the world, even with a limited visit, and would love to return to the city to explore it more fully someday. Plus I still haven’t made it to Chernobyl yet, so that’s another reason to return.

With each of these cities, I had both good and bad experiences and would love to go back. I also only spent about a day in each, so I believe revisiting would improve my opinion of them. A couple of them are in my top 10 favorite cities already, so I want to return to make sure they really do belong there. But in each of these cases, I do hope to return again someday. There are so many places to visit in the world, so choosing to spend my time to return somewhere I’ve already been is not an easy choice, but these are places that I do want to revisit in addition to visiting new places.
